Are All HEPA Filters The Same Quality?

HEPA filters are not all the same. They can differ in the quality of the materials and the density of the fibers. Before purchasing, you should learn the difference between True HEPA and HEPA-type.

True HEPA Vs. HEPA-Type

True HEPA filters can effectively filter 99.97% of harmful airborne particles the size of 0.3 microns and are tested according to the HEPA standards set by the U.S. Department of Energy.

Anything that filters less are called HEPA-type filters because they do not filter as efficiently. Unfortunately, some HEPA-type products are being marketed as True HEPA, particularly low-end unbranded air purifier products.

HEPA Filters With Activated Carbon

HEPA filters can trap small particles; however, they cannot remove odor and filter gases in the air. If you want an air purifier with an odor eliminator, choose an appliance that uses HEPA filters with activated carbon.

Activated carbon, also known as activated charcoal, is a natural material made from bamboo, coconut shells, wood, or coal. It undergoes a process that activates its components and makes it more porous. It sucks up and traps air pollutants, including gases and odor.

How Often Should I Change HEPA Filters?

Air filters can get clogged with dust and pollutants after a few months of use; that's why it ideally needs replacement once a year for optimum performance.

Some brands recommend changing it every six months while others say three years, but generally, the ideal recommendation is 12 months. For optimum performance, follow the manufacturer's recommendation on the frequency of cleaning and filter replacement.

How do you know if you should change your HEPA filter? A visual check of the filter should be enough for you to assess whether the filter needs replacement. If the filter is covered with gray or black particles, it should be an indication to replace it.

Why Are HEPA Filters So Expensive?

HEPA filters are expensive because they undergo testing before they pass the certification process to meet True HEPA standards. Testing can be expensive and can cost as much as $300 per type of filter. Big brands undergo this quality testing for their filter replacement products, that's why their filters are a bit more expensive.

According to quality assurance standards, the product should be able to filter 99.97% of pollen, mold, bacteria, and other harmful particles carried into the air the size of 0.3 microns. The U.S. Department of Energy is the regulating body that sets the specifications for HEPA filter standards.

Is A HEPA Air Filter Worth It?

Yes, HEPA air filters are worth it. Buying a high-quality air filter is a worthy investment. But don't just take our word for it. This information came directly from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

According to EPA's 'Guide To Air Cleaners In The Home,' the best way to improve indoor air quality is to remove the source of air pollution and let clean outdoor air circulate into the home. However, for instances when the weather does not permit letting in indoor air, a portable air purifier or HVAC filter is a very effective supplementary solution.

When purchasing a portable air purifier, it's important to choose one that has a clean air delivery rate (CADR). The higher CADR test numbers mean it has a very good filtration performance. Most air purifiers with a high CADR use a HEPA filter which is why they achieve a high rating.

Purchasing an air filter is worth it, especially when there are members of the family that have sensitive lungs, such as babies, or are suffering from respiratory issues such as asthma and allergies. Air purifiers are not a guarantee that the symptoms of asthma or allergies will go away. In most cases, there won't be a significant improvement, but it will surely help.

Air purifiers also do not eliminate the source of mold or odors. Cleaning and removing the source of the pollution is still the best course of action. What works best is a combination of various methods to help improve indoor air quality.
