How To Connect Ecobee To Wi-Fi

Ecobee will work just fine as a thermostat even without connecting to Wi-Fi. However, leaving it disconnected would be a waste, since it is a smart thermostat.

With internet access, you can maximize the use of your Ecobee's features, even remotely. When setting up your Ecobee for the first time after installation, you will be prompted with Wi-Fi configuration.

You can skip this part, but it is recommended to connect your Ecobee to the Wi-Fi at this stage. This way, you can create an Ecobee account from the get-go.

You can also connect to the Wi-Fi later through these steps:

  1. On your Ecobee, go to the main menu
  2. Go to Settings
  3. Select Wi-Fi
  4. Enable Wi-Fi radio
  5. Select Network
  6. You can either set up your Wi-Fi through an iOS device or simply Select Wi-Fi Network
  7. Select your Wi-Fi name from the list. Us the 2.4Ghz network if you are on a dual-band network
  8. Input your password and connect

How To Change Ecobee Settings

An Ecobee smart thermostat in a home.

Building a tailor-fit schedule on your Ecobee is one of the key lifestyles features the smart thermostat offers. You can adjust these schedule settings on either Ecobee itself, the mobile app, or on the online web portal.

Take note that there are some caveats to this. Certain settings are not available all across the Ecobee, app, and web portal. Some can only be changed on a specific platform.

Most thermostat and HVAC system-related parameters will be found only on the Ecobee itself and are inaccessible through the app or web portal—for example, the more advanced settings for adjusting the threshold or emergency heat.

The mobile app has similar settings to the Ecobee itself. But, as mentioned, it cannot adjust the more advanced HVAC system parameters. You cannot adjust comfort settings in the mobile app. This has to be done on the web portal.

On the Ecobee web portal, you have more access to specific comfort and lifestyle settings. Your Ecobee comes equipped with pre-programmed activities such as Home, Sleep, and Away, but you can add your own custom activities.

How To Build A Schedule On Ecobee

You can set your schedule on the Ecobee itself. What is a Schedule? On the Ecobee, you can schedule your thermostat to automatically control the temperature for you at certain times of the day.

You can program your Ecobee to either heat or cool, and at what temperature range to stay. Setting your schedule uses the same steps and similar UI on both the thermostat itself and on the mobile app.

  1. Go to your thermostat settings or open the app
  2. On the main menu, go to Schedule

You can now set your schedule! The interface shows you all the days of the week. From here, you can change the start time of the three default activities (Sleep, Home, Away).

You can even copy schedules from each day to make this process faster. Add more comfort settings by tapping the plus sign in the upper right corner.

What do you do if you want to schedule an activity besides the default three? You have to open the web portal to do this. Follow these steps:

  1. Go to www.ecobee.com on a web browser
  2. Sign in to your Ecobee account
  3. Click on the Schedule widget
  4. Click the New Comfort Setting option

Now you can completely customize your new comfort setting! In doing so, you can change the name and then adjust temperatures for both heat mode and cool mode. You can also change the fan settings, occupancy, and sensors.

With your customized comfort settings now added, you can see them in the activities list when building your schedule! It is now an available option all across your Ecobee, mobile app, and of course the web portal.

A helpful thing to remember is to take care when assigning time to your activities. You don't want to risk your schedule failing because of conflicting activity times.

You also cannot set the same Comfort Settings back-to-back. For example, you cannot set Sleep at 11:00 PM and set Sleep again at 11:30 PM.

Does Ecobee Have Zone Control?

You can also set your schedule to have the Ecobee adjust the temperature throughout the day. With this feature in mind, you might be wondering if the Ecobee is compatible with an HVAC zoning system.

Yes, Ecobee supports zoned systems! What is a zoned system? Simply put, this type of HVAC system redirects the air to specific parts of your home. Through dampers in the ductwork, you can program your system to regulate airflow.

Ecobee thermostats are convenient because, aside from being compatible with zoned systems, there is no need to have a special setup for them. All you have to do is follow the installation instructions when connecting your Ecobee, and it will be able to work with the system.

You will be able to connect your thermostat to each zone of your HVAC system with no zone controllers required. Additionally, you can use a zone board or relay, as well as hot-water zone valves with your Ecobee.

Keep in mind that the power requirement for the Ecobee is 24V, so make sure each device is compatible.

Can Ecobee Control Multiple Zones?

Despite being compatible with zone control, a single Ecobee cannot control multiple zones. This means that to independently control the temperature in each zone, you will need more than one thermostat.

You can set up more than one Ecobees in your home for the different zones, and control them all with one account. The Ecobee app and web portal come in handy this way.

When dealing with multiple zones, you don't have to go to each Ecobee thermostat to adjust its settings. Instead, you can control each zone remotely through your phone or computer, all in one place.

How To Set Up A Multi-Zone Thermostat

Ecobee is handy since it does not need a zone controller. You can install your Ecobee straight to the zoning board.

Additionally, connecting to a multi-zone HVAC system typically involves connecting more than one Ecobee thermostat. You can install these with the Power Extender Kit (PEK) that is included with each Ecobee unit.

Though owning multiple Ecobees is an investment, using these with a zoned HVAC system can help cut costs in the long run. Since you can automatically manage the airflow of multiple zones, it will be more time and energy efficient.
